Bees

Bees

Order: Hymenoptera

Introduction

Honeybees are the most common Bees that are encountered around the home. They are social insects that live in a colony called a hive.Whilst bees are traditionally considered to be a passive insect and only use their stinger as a last resort defence mechanism, they can be very territorial in nature.

This can pose a threat to your family if Bees feel their hive is threatened and decide to swarm.

Bees have a painful sting that produces histamine which can result in anaphylactic shock, swelling in airways, difficulty in breathing a drop in blood pressure, and in some cases - cause Death.Bees often construct hives in wall cavities and within ceiling cavities causing costly repairs when their honey seeps through damaging large areas of plaster.

It is common to confuse bees with wasps in particular Honey Bees - however there are some distinct visual differences:

  • Bees have much more hair on their bodies varying in colour from golden brown to almost black and are furrier than wasps
  • Wasps have a tighter waist between the thorax and abdomen than Bees.
  • Bees are more orangey yellow whilst Wasps have distinctive bright yellow and black markings on their bodies.
  • Wasps have far more visually aggressive flight habits than do bees.

The treatment available for a bee hive and wasp nest differs greatly.

We will only chemically control bees as a last resort. Bees are an endangered species and a hive will only be treated if removal is not an option. For example, when access to the hive is severely restricted and even dangerous, or perhaps located within the confines of a structure and posing a significant threat to the occupants inside or for the treating technician.

While bees are not considered to be a problem pest as such, they can pose a serious health threat for those allergic to their stings. For these people constant vigilance is required as a severe reaction, left untreated, can lead to death

Bees are vital to the environment and necessary to all agriculture. An amount of bees in a garden is normal and shouldn't be alarming, but if you feel there is a mass of bees around your property then call us.

Bug Catchers employs a dedicated Apiarist who will come and assess each individual situation on its own merit. We will collect the bees and remove the hive when practical, (without harming the bees) or control the bees in a humane and environmentally friendly manner if they are deemed a threat to humans.

DO NOT approach them, DO NOT attempt to remove or treat a colony by yourself. Many supermarket and hardware chemicals simply annoy them simply resulting in aggravating them even further.

Honey Bee

Apis

Honey Bee
  • Quite commonly kept by bee keepers, these bees build hives in the hollows of trees or sometimes in chimneys, wall or ceiling cavities.
  • They are often mistaken for wasps but are furrier and orangey black in colour.
  • Honey bees convert water and nectar into honey and beeswax, (the main material required for hive cell construction).
  • A honey bee swarm will arrive in flight and cluster on a tree branch.
  • A colony size can reach up to 30,000 and beyond.

Solitary Bee

Hymenoptera

Solitary Bee
  • Similar in appearance to the honey bee, the solitary bee.
  • Creates small nests which are tended by a female, often in soil, sometimes found in the crumbling mortar between bricks.
  • The Solitary bee does not swarm, it is non aggressive and rarely stings.

More Information

  • Threatened swarming bees are aggressive and may attack a person in numbers large enough to cause death.
  • The venom of bees is toxic and may cause extensive swelling of the skin, particularly in children and deaths are reported in Victoria every year as a result.
  • Some people have a naturally low tolerance to bee venom and will become sensitised if stung repeatedly on different occasions.
  • Bee swarms increase in frequency in the periods around late summer and during spring. When colony numbers are peaking, a new Queen will take flight, accompanied by the Drones and excess numbers of Workers and swarm into new areas to establish new hive sites.
  • The Queen is the only reproductive female in the hive and is capable of laying up to 1500 eggs daily.
  • Bees live in true type colonies and follow a caste system that consists of a Queen, Worker bees and Drones.
  • Workers are sterile females who gather nectar, pollen and water and secrete wax to build the Honeycomb and convert the nectar into honey. They also handle the responsibility of feeding the larvae and the queen
  • Pollen supplies the colony with protein, fat and minerals essential to the growth of the hive.
  • The Workers are also the protectors of the hive and it is their job to maintain the temperature of the brood chambers at a sultry 33.9oC
  • The Drone bees are stingless and have no pollen baskets or wax glands like the workers. Their sole purpose is to mate with the Queen then they die.
  • Honeybees perform a dance at the entrance to the hive to inform the other bees about the location of a new food supply. The dance details the distance and the direction of the new flowers.

First aid information:

Important: The following information is provided as a guide only and should not in any way be relied upon or used as a substitute for professional medical advice. If you are in any doubt in regards to a physical reaction you are experiencing as the result of a pest related encounter please consult a doctor or medical professional immediately.

If you experience any of the following symptoms after being stung:

  • difficulty breathing
  • wheezing
  • vomiting
  • nausea or diarrhoea
  • feeling faint or dizzy
  • swollen face or mouth
  • problems swallowing
  • asthmatic or any other type of allergic reaction

Then seek medical attention immediately.

  • If stung wash the area with soap and warm water then apply icepacks to reduce the pain and swelling. If breathing becomes difficult employ the use of a Ventolin inhaler.
  • If the person who is stung presents with an allergic reaction, then treat as you would for snake bites, immobilise and wrap a bandage around the stings.
  • Take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to soothe any pain.
  • You can take antihistamine or green lipped muscle extract tablets to help reduce any swelling around the sting. However if you are in any doubt about a bee sting please consult a doctor or medical professional.
  • If you discover a Bee hive Do not panic - keep calm, move slowly and proceed to back away.
  • Do not scream or become overly animated flapping your arms around or trying to swat them this will just agitate them and make them more aggressive.

Commercial Information

Whilst bees are a traditionally passive insect and only use their stinger as a last resort defence mechanism, they can be very territorial in nature. This can pose a threat to your patrons if Bees feel their hive is threatened and decide to swarm.
  • In the warmer months, bee populations can multiply dramatically and a typical hive can accommodate up to 20,000 bees at any one time.
  • Bees will build nests in trees close to homes or offices, in some cases, within wall cavities, chimneys and ceilings.
  • Bug Catchers employs a dedicated Apiarist who will come and assess each individual situation, collect the bees and remove the hive when practical, (without harming the bees) or control the bees in a humane and environmentally friendly manner.

The treatment of Bees is an integrated effort that involves habitat and source eradication coupled with the use of chemical control products as needed. This may include the application of insecticides to the vegetation sites that adult bees use for harbourage and breeding purposes or introducing insect growth regulators to help prevent development.

Bee population control is dependent upon the availability of breeding habitats and the particular target species, as well as many other factors. Should you experience Bees in your working environment, contact us to discuss the options.

Supermarket insect repellents can be effective at temporarily keeping a small amount of Bees at bay however studies have found that Bees can ignore repellents over time as a result of repeated exposure. Supermarket repellents also begin to lose their effectiveness soon after being applied, which requires them to be constantly reapplied in order to maintain even the slightest level of protection. The only practical and effective way to control Bee populations, is with the targeted application of quality commercial pesticides used in conjunction with an effective environmental control program.
