Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs

Cimex lectularius; from the family: Cimicidae

Introduction

There are many misconceptions about how you get an infestation of bed bugs in the home. A common belief is that a poorly kept, unclean house will naturally attract them, or that affluent people who live in luxury don't get them, but the reality is Bed Bugs do not discriminate. They survive by feeding off human and animal blood – and they will simply go wherever the feeding is good and accommodation is dry. In domestic residences any infestation is usually centred on the sleeping areas.

Bed bugs are small wingless insects measuring no more than 6mm long, (about the size of an apple pip), when fully grown. They cannot fly or jump, instead they crawl, typically hiding in your luggage after being transported home. They range in colour from a light tan to a deep brown when fully engorged after taking in a blood meal. This makes them stand out and usually easier to spot.

Typically dormant during the day and active mostly at night, these blood sucking parasites prefer to feed in the early morning hours before returning to their hiding spots. Bed Bugs usually feed every 2 to 3 days, for 3 to 5 minutes at a time and can survive for long periods between meals.

When Bed bugs bite, they inject a mix of an anaesthetic saliva and anti-coagulant chemical into the feeding site to prevent you being alerted to their bite and to delay your blood from clotting. This allows them to extract your blood at will until they become fully engorged and finally withdraw. These insects usually test pierce your skin two or three times before settling in for a good five minute feed. Bed Bug bites are usually painless at first, but adverse skin reactions from their bites will develop as the anti-coagulant chemical makes the bite area highly irritable, and scratching the area can cause infection and even scarring to occur.

Pest Signs... What to look for...

The following are some of the 'Tell-tale signs' of a bed Bug infestation:

  • Waking up with fresh bites on exposed skin that have a linear pattern rather than the randomness associated with multiple mosquito bite sites.
  • Bed bug bites can occur anywhere on the body and are unlikely to wake you from your sleep.
  • Blood and excrement stains on bedding, walls, she ets, pillow cases, doona covers, carpets etc.
  • Bed Bugs discarded egg shells and shed skins, (remember there are 5 nymphal stages before adult hood), littering the spaces in and around the sleeping areas.
  • Well established infestations will create an offensive 'sickly sweet', musty or even coriander type odour.
  • Bed bug eggs appear as tiny pale coloured poppy seeds. These cream coloured eggs are approximately 1mm in length and will hatch within around 10 days.
  • Their droppings appear as small dark reddish brown spots of faecal matter.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small wingless insects measuring no more than 6mm long when fully grown. They range in colour from a light tan to a deep brown when fully engorged after taking in a blood meal. This makes them stand out and usually easier to spot. Bed Bugs usually feed every 2 to 3 days, for 3 to 5 minutes at a time and can survive for long periods between meals.

The adult female bed bug must have a blood meal to provide protein before egg laying can occur. Bed bugs go through five nymphal stages called moults before becoming mature reproductive adults. Each stage requires a blood meal that allows the pest to achieve this moult.

This cycle generally takes around two months to complete, and under the right conditions, a life can span as long as nine months. During this period the females usually lay three or four eggs per day, (note: the eggs are not affected by pesticides and more than one chemical treatment is sometimes needed before all of the hatching nymphs are killed), each hatching after about 6-10 days meaning a single female can produce up to 500 offspring in her lifetime.

More Information

  • Bed Bugs tend to live in socialized groups and will typically create their harbourages inside your mattress, along the edges of the mattress piping, around bed springs, bed frames, inside light switches, in the corners of headboards and around the edges of carpet to name a few. We have even found them hiding inside light globes!
  • Bed Bug infestations are not limited to the inside of bedrooms alone, they have been found in 5 star hotel suites, aeroplane cabins, suburban buses and in movie cinemas.
  • Bed Bugs reproduce rapidly which has allowed them to build up immunity to the many pesticide products previously employed to control them.
  • Bed bug eggs are usually laid in clusters of 10 to 50 at a time, in cracks and crevices and are attached to surfaces by a transparent adhesive substance excreted by the female.
  • The application of pesticide treatments within the confides of human sleeping quarters are incredibly fraught with danger so it's vitally important to choose the correct most up-to-date quality chemicals available to avoid any health and safety issues.
  • Bedbugs are nocturnal feeding parasites that have highly developed mouth parts that can pierce the human skin without disturbing or waking their host.
  • Bed bugs mate with the male inseminating the female by piercing her abdomen cavity with his needle like genitalia. This is practice is called traumatic insemination and tends to result in males often mistakenly mating with other males.
  • Bed Bugs will always try to live as close to a host as practicality would permit once they find a suitable donor.
  • They are not known to generally feed on pets and other animals as Bed bugs prefer humans to provide their meal.
  • Adults can survive up to one year in ideal situations without feeding.
  • Bed bugs feed on the exposed skin areas like the neck, face, arms and hands.
  • A full feeding cycle can last as long as 20 minutes, providing sufficient blood to last between five to ten days before feeding is required again.
  • Under ideal weather conditions bed bugs can live in hibernation for long periods and are known to survive up to a year without feeding.
  • Bed Bugs live in clusters and breed well in cool and damp conditions.
  • When feeding, adults inject anaesthetic saliva mixed with anti-coagulants and painkillers to keep their sleeping host undisturbed while sucking out their blood. Reactions to Bed bug bites may not appear straight away and can be delayed up to 9 days before the bite marks appear.
  • Children do not cope well when being continuously bitten by bed bugs. Their sensitive skin and under developed immune systems cannot withstand the repeated attacks leaving them exposed and prone to illness.
  • Raised and reddened skin around the bite site extends to approximately 2cm in diameter and is often followed by itchiness.
  • Approximately 1 in every 10 Australians will encounter bed bugs
  • Bed bugs multiply quickly and are very good at adapting to new environments. They thrive in room temperatures of around 200C and can survive for long periods in colder climates, so once detected it's important to get a Bed bug problem under control quickly.
  • When Bed bug eggs hatch they are called nymphs. The nymphs are pale in colour and are approximately 1-4mm in length. There are 5 metamorphic nymphal stages each requiring a blood meal before adulthood can be achieved.
  • Females usually lay three or four eggs per day, (note: the eggs are not affected by pesticides), each hatching after about 6-10 days meaning a single female can produce up to 500 offspring in her lifetime.
  • Bed bugs are attracted to the body heat and the CO2 levels emitted by humans when they sleep.

Prevention tips

We can advise you on ways to help prevent and minimise the likelihood of bedbugs re-establishing inside and around your home, for instance:

A successful treatment is dependent upon the close co-operation between the property owner and the pest controller. Prior to and after your bed bug treatment, we highly recommend you consider these helpful tips.

  • We recommend sealing gaps in furniture, floor boards, cracks in wallpaper and any other harbourage areas that allows bed bugs to hide.
  • Maintaining elevated standards of hygiene and sanitation is paramount as an on-going preventive measure and prudent as a back up to any chemical treatment.
  • All clothing, bed linen and curtains should be laundered prior to our insecticidal treatment.
  • Thorough vacuuming of all floor areas including carpets, carpet edges, rugs and furniture is required. Be careful to ensure the contents of your vacuum cleaner are disposed of in the rubbish bin immediately.
  • Schedule regular professional inspections for any signs of re-infestation, (especially important for commercial lodgings where bed bug infestations are more likely to reoccur).
  • Bed Bugs are a tricky and difficult little pest to deal with so please, DO NOT attempt any type of do-it yourself eradication on your own. It usually never results in success and will make our job even harder.
  • Spraying a supermarket aerosol pesticide on bed-linen or mattress can may you very sick or get you prosecuted if a tenant gets sick, with no guarantee that the bed bugs will even be controlled successfully).
  • If you have already established the presence of an infestation it's recommended that you do not change your sleeping location, this will enable the spread the pests as they follow you to the next room and so-on.
  • Care must be taken when removing any items from an infested area. Pre sealing them in plastic bags before they leave the room is recommended.
  • Any sensitive materials can be placed in a freezer for a period of time adequate enough to kill the bugs without causing any adverse effect to the items.
  • Beware of buying second goods; beds, mattresses, suitcases; furniture and clothing are great means of transport for Bed bugs or their eggs.
  • Bed bugs are attracted to the body heat and the CO2 levels emitted by humans when they sleep
  • Bed bugs do not cope well when subjected to temperatures above 50ºc so placing infected items in black plastic bags and putting them out into the sun to heat up for several hours can be helpful.

First Aid Information:

Important: The following information is provided as a guide only and should not in any way be relied upon or used as a substitute for professional medical advice. If you are in any doubt in regards to a physical reaction you are experiencing as the result of a pest related encounter please consult a doctor or medical professional immediately.

If you experience any of the following symptoms after being stung:
  • difficulty breathing.
  • wheezing.
  • vomiting.
  • nausea or diarrhoea.
  • feeling faint or dizzy.
  • swollen face or mouth.
  • problems swallowing.
  • asthmatic or any other type of allergic reaction.

Then seek medical attention immediately.

Bed Bug bites can become particularly painful and distressing to adults, children and pets.

Firstly the bite area should be washed with an antiseptic soap and water; this can be done 2 or 3 times a day. An ice pack or cold compress can be used for 15- 20 minutes at a time and Ibuprofen can be taken to reduce pain after consulting a doctor.

If a skin rash is noticed and if the pain persists for more than a number of days, seek medical attention. Never scratch the bite area as this worsens the situation and can cause scarring and infection - Calamine lotion can be applied on the bitten areas.

Bed bug treatment is an integrated effort that involves habitat and source eradication coupled with the use of chemical control products as needed. This may include the application of insecticides to the vegetation sites that adult Bed Bugs use for harbourage and breeding purposes or introducing insect growth regulators to help prevent development.

Bed Bug population control is dependent upon the availability of breeding habitats and the particular target species, as well as many other factors. Should you experience Bed Bugs in your working environment, contact us to discuss the options.

Supermarket insect repellents can be effective at temporarily keeping a small amount of bed bugs at bay however studies have found that most Bed Bugs can ignore repellents over time as a result of repeated exposure. Supermarket repellents also begin to lose their effectiveness soon after being applied, which requires them to be constantly reapplied in order to maintain even the slightest level of protection.

The only practical and effective way to control Bed Bug populations, is with the targeted application of quality commercial pesticides used in conjunction with an effective environmental control program. And this is what we provide!
